Objectives: This review attempted to determine the usage trends of the Transtheoretical model (TTM) in domestic research.
Methods: The study was conducted on 194 studies applying the TTM in Korea from 1998 to 2015, and was analyzed according to the major and frequency of use of constructs and Korean terminology.
Results: The results showed that the major areas of study applying the TTM and target behaviors had become more diversified. ¡®Stage of change¡¯ was the most commonly used construct, but ¡®Process of change¡¯ and ¡®Self-efficacy/Temptation¡¯ were the least used. Studies using all four constructs showed only 50 percent of the total. The name TTM was translated with varying degrees, with some of the constructs causing confusion because various Korean terms were used, such as ¡®relapse stage¡¯, ¡®dramatic relief¡¯, ¡®stimulus control¡¯, and ¡®cons¡¯.
Conclusions: For valid and effective application of the TTM, more research is needed involving the use of a whole model rather than a single construct. Furthermore, there is a need to use standardized Korean terminology based on the multidisciplinary agreement, where this study can provide the basis of a multidisciplinary approach.
